Let's go to DUMAGUETE CITY

-You get tired but it's worth it when you get there.
Let's visit the province of DUMAGUETE
in Negros ORRIENTAL!!!

There are the two provinces in Negros Island and one of the two provinces there is negros Oriental. The Province has a total of 25 towns including City of Gentle People, the Dumaguete City, its capital.
As a tourist let's find out the hidden beauty of negros Oriental in the city of Dumaguete.

Some of the people who visit Negros Oriental are usually  ride to a plane or ferries to enter the province. And every people who visit there has their own reason why they want to go there. Some of them are just wants to visit their  families and relatives there that they missed  and some of them are the tourists or a travelers that wants to have a very expensive vacation there or to have an adventure.

When you have vacation and you want it to spend in the province of negros Oriental  then I recommend to you to go in the city of Gentle People, the Dumaguete City.

You can be explored Dumaguete in just a single day, but that is only the city itself where there really isn't that much to see. If you really want to explored and appreciate the place, you need to go a bit farther. You need at least four to five days to fully explore the most accessible tourist spot in Negros Oriental.

DAY ONE

cathedral of st Catherine of Alexandria

When you arrive in Dumaguete City you can early check in to a hotel there and have your breakfast.

When you are done with it you can get around Dumaguete. If you want to go church before your tour you can visit the St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral, built in the 17th century and considered as the largest church in the city. the cathedral is located along Perdices Street in front of the Rizal Park.

The next destination after the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria is the Silliman University. The university is located in the charming city of Dumaguete, dubbed the 'City of Gentle People,' an hour away by plane from Manila and four hours away by boat from Cebu. Silliman thrives in a city where the strip of restaurants offering good food along the boulevard and where everything a student needs are just a stone's throw away. While offering the coveted 'retirement getaway' environment, the city is not left behind by progress. You can find infrastructure developments and businesses sprouting in support of the city's "University Town" concept.

Silliman Museum

The distinctive facade of the Silliman Museum usually represents Dumaguete City on postcards and pamphlets.

Silliman University’s laid back atmosphere; it’s tree-lined boulevards, its grassy fields and its very American architecture.

The Silliman Hall, where the anthropology museum is located, was built in the early 1900’s in the American Eastern Stick Style. Parts of the structure, like its metal pan ceiling and cast iron columns, are reclaimed from a New York theater. It used to be an assembly hall before it was converted to a museum in 1973.

Our next stop is the SANS RIVAL BISTRO for the Lunch. It is located along the Rizal Boulevard. This is one of the restaurants in Dumaguete which is facing the beautiful view of the ocean. A perfect place to spend some quality time with your friends and families while having a nice meal, or simply a snack.

And after having lunch we are going to visit the Balinsasayao Lakes. It's small but a deep lake in the crater of a volcano. This is one of the most beautiful place here in Dumaguete that you can enjoy with your families even your friends.

If you want to see a very beautiful sunset, Rizal Boulevard is the perfect place for that. You can also have a walk there while you are enjoying the view.

Walk around Rizal Boulevard for the sunset (this place faces the east, but you still get pretty nice colors during sunset). After that you can have your dinner in Tempurahan near at the boulevard.

DAY TWO

Waking up to the hotel that you were check in and having your breakfast their. After that let's continue our tour in Negros Oriental.

Depart for Valencia tour

Dumaguete is surrounded with exquisite waterfalls all of which are breathtaking and worth every bead of sweat and trouble. In fact they are all equally stunning that you would want to see all of them at once. But when you’re a little pressed with time, would you know which one to choose and see first and which one to leave for later? In  the battle of beauty and convenience, only two waterfalls in Dumaguete stand out among tourists, The Casaroro Falls and Pulangbato Falls, both of which are situated in the sleepy town of Valencia.

Casaroro Falls is our destination this day. In the town of Valencia, Negros Oriental located at west of Dumaguete City lies the beautiful Casaroro Falls considered to be the most photographed waterfall in the entire Negros province.
Casaroro Falls is lodged deep into the rock crevices of the rugged Valencia mountains. With an astounding height of 100 feet, the water plunges into a deep cold basin before it flows down to a stream. The waterfall is considerably narrow, instead of the usual wide cascade, but this is precisely what makes Casaroro unique. Though despite its narrowness, the volume of water that drops is heavy and causes a roar as it touches the pool. Around the basin are natural boulders huge enough to rest any traveler’s weary feet.

I tell you if there is one thing I would warn you about, it’s the fact that Casaroro Falls is a play hard to get kind of waterfall just like most of the other majestic waterfalls in the country. She is a 20-minute motorcycle ride from the town proper of Valencia and another 15 minutes walk down a 357 steps stairway. And just when you think you are free of all the hassle after that, such a shame as you are totally mistaken. From the base of the stairway, you have to endure 20-30 minutes of trek through a muddy and rugged terrain scattered with boulders of every shape and size all the way to where lies Casaroro Falls. This trek isn’t for the fainthearted. This is for those whose got the resolve enough to get through the challenge of occasionally tripping and falling on your back. This is for those whose got lungs that can bag unlimited supply of air as you will badly need it. This is for those whose got no knees that will suddenly turn to jelly at anytime. This is for those who are really up to the challenge and will stop at nothing just to behold this exquisite work of nature.

So what exactly awaits you after the trouble you’ve gone through?… It is that sight that will literally soothes you and relieve you of all that exhaustion you endured just to get you to where you are. It is that feeling that will make you forget what you’ve gone through as the sight in front of you is what made it worth of it all. It is that calmness within your soul as you watch yourself get tangled in a dream while the gushing waters of Casaroro Falls sings you a lullaby.
Casaroro Falls exudes unearthly elegance. It is like a deity. An angel from heaven. Its presence is serenity. Sanity even. Its beauty is something you’ll never get tired of. It will make you feel oblivious of the world and every nuisance of this mundane life. It will charm you in a way that no one can as if trapping you in a spell no power in this world can ever break. Yes. It is exemplary as that.

Don’t ever think to end a day without seeing Pulangbato Falls while you are in Valencia. While the alluring Casaroro Falls may seem to be good enough reason to cap off the day, not seeing Pulangbato falls is a miss you might regret until your dying days. She may be the exact opposite of the more famous, more photographed Casaroro as she doesn’t play hard to get but don’t ever think her being easy isn’t worth a million snaps of your camera.

Pulangbato Falls is located within a place locals call Red River Valley. It is 30-45 minutes of motorcycle ride from the town proper of Valencia and if you aren’t into trekking for a few good minutes then fret not as you don’t need to just to see this beguiling waterfall. From the registration point, you can already hear her waters calling you out singing to you like soulful sirens. After registration, all you have to do is walk for a good 15 steps and there she lies, a priceless luxury you can indulge in.
Pulangbato falls speaks true to its name. It will enchant you in her crimson world. Its color may be resembling that of blood but she is as enticing as a red velvet. Its cool pristine waters running over red limestone rocks is one of the few things in this world one can call perfect. It is a tempest. Seductive. Irresistible. It will remind you of strong women. Hard as a warrior but gentle as silk. You can try to resist a dip in its enchanting world but mind you, it is futile as it already have you wrapped in her arms from the very first minute your eyes set sight of its charm.

After of the long hours of tour we are going back to the hotel and eat our dinner there.

DAY THREE

Breakfast at hotel

Today we are going to have Depart for Bais & Manjuyod tour

First is Dolphin and Whale Watching is fast becoming a national attraction as well. It has gained popularity among travelers both local and foreign because of its appealing combination of activities.
The adventure starts with a cruise along Bais Bay then out to Tañon Strait, the natural habitat of several whale and dolphin specie. Among the kinds of dolphins you may encounter during the trip are , pantropical spotted dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and long snouted spinner dolphins. Melon headed whales, short finned pilot whales, pygmy sperm whales, pygmy killer whales and dwarf sperm whales are commonly found in the Tañon Strait too.
After the show of sea mamma Manjuyod White Sand Bar where the boat temporarily docks. Here you can savor your lunch of grilled pork and fish while looking out into the blue sea and sky and the white sands of Manjuyod. This place is also ideal for swimming, sunbathing, snorkeling and scuba diving in the nearby reefs.

ls, you head out to
The tour takes a full day beginning from seven in the morning and ending at four in the afternoon. The dolphin and whale watching seasons are during the months of March to October. The rest of the year is affected by the Northeast Monsoon or Amihan which makes cruising difficult. The wind and waves also inhibit the dolphins and whales from emerging.

Now we are going to our next and last destination today the Talabong Mangrove Park that you can really enjoy the ambiance.
Talabong Mangrove Park is a 400-hectare wide mangrove forest which naturally favors bird and wildlife habitation. The Tabalong Mangrove Park is another must see tourist destination in Bais City. The fun begins at the 5,968 boardwalk platform. The sanctuary is home to native birds and other wildlife.  You'll have the chance to see birds fly the pristine canopy as you take in the symphony of whistles and chirps.  The Talabong Mangrove Park is truly a fascinating and enjoyable experience.

Dinner at Dumaguete *END OF THREE-DAY ITINERARY

DAY FOUR
Breakfast at hotel

Depart for Apo Island
Apo Island is one of the world's best known community-organized marine sanctuaries. Apo is a tiny island with a small beach. the small town uses gathered rainwater as tap water. there is electricity only 3 hours a day (19-22). and there is no wifi conectivity (exept for liberty lodge, and it is strictly for hotel guests only - eating at their restaurant will not grant you access to the wifi...). Upon arrival you will be asked to pay 100p per person island fee. this tax is taken even if you are not staying overnight. Overall the island is very nice and the locals are extremely friendly.
Apo Island
One of the Philippines' famous diving sites, Apo Island has one of the world's best known community-organized marine sanctuaries. It is home to over 650 documented species of fish and estimated to have over 400 species of corals. It is a must dive for any serious aficionado in the Philippines.
  • Snorkel / See turtlesGreen Sea turtles come routinely to the south west coast (near the beach off the bakery near Liberty resort) for eating and cleaning. Snorkeling here will invariably result in a pleasant encounter with these beautiful creatures. Snorkels and lifejackets are available for hire at the shops that line the lane off Liberty lodge and the tourist assistance center, for about 250 pesos. If you have your own gear and you are exerienced snorkeler/freediver, you can go snorkeling off the beach in front of Liberty resort (near big stones). Head in the direction towards the light house (opposite direction of the village). There are beautifull corals, turtles, lava bubbles and a lot of different marine life to be seen there. Is is also less crowded, because it is a dive spot.
  • TrekThere are at least six different treks in the island - ranging from 1 to 4.5 in difficulty (on a scale of 1=easy and 5=tough).
  • DiveTwo dive shops are located on the island itself. The reefs along Apo island tend to be among the best dive spots in the world. however, watch out for poor visibility when seas are rough (often).
  • Eco TrailThe eco trail is a 45 minute trek (difficulty level = 3) from the lagoon avenue (marked on google maps) to the view deck (on the southern tip of the island). Carry at least 1 liter of water per person, bring your shades and hat, wear full clothes (in some parts, the grass is very close to the trail / covers it). The trail can be steep. Wear walking / running shoes.
  • Relax on the BeachThe beaches are small (the island mainly is hilly with rocky cliffs), but clean, and bereft of tourists (mostly residents of the island - who number less than 1000!). You can easily sit on the beach at any time, or even sleep on it at night. After 10 pm, all lights on the island go off (since the generator is switched off) and the view from the beach of a star studded sky is over whelming.
  • Lighthouse TrekThe trek up the lighthouse (difficulty level = 2.5) consists of concrete steps most of the way (and muddy trails along some part). It takes you to the tallest point on the island, with a modern solar powered lighthouse on one side, and the old abandoned lighthouse next to it (you can see the abandoned lighthouse keepers chambers and the old disused fresnel lens). Views on the eco trail are far better than the views here. Time taken = 40 minutes.

This is our last day here in the Negros Oriental and the destination that we are going to visit is the Bagong Church. It is the best-preserved church complex in Negros Oriental. The finely- cut stonework of the belltower is noteworthy, as well as its material, which is not the usual white coralline type, and stylistic elements (new - Renaissance quoins). There are also painted friezes in the sacristy.

On our fourth day here in Negros Oriental, we were treated by Island Leisure Boutique hotel and spa for our tour in Apo Island. Its one of the activities they offer to their guest.

GETTING AROUND DUMAGUETE & NEGROS ORIENTAL

The main mode of transportation in Dumaguete City is the tricycle, the minimum fare is PHP10.00. Single motorbikes called habal-habal are also numerous and much cheaper, albeit a bit more dangerous, at PHP8.00 per passenger. Traveling to the nearby towns, jeeps and buses, both air-conditioned and ordinary, are available at their respective terminals. The best way to go around the province and not to mention the cheapest, is by renting a motorbike (PHP400.00/day - Kokoi’s Motorbike Rental 0926-9230455).

WHERE TO STAY IN DUMAGUETE & NEGROS ORIENTAL

With Dumaguete being the center of commerce and education in Negros Oriental, there isn’t any shortage of accommodations to stay in; posh hotels, budget rooms and a few resorts. With the university being so near, however, make sure to book ahead of your stay. There are instances when almost all of the lodging houses would be fully booked due to conventions and events happening at Silliman. For other towns in Negros Oriental, resorts and small hotels are also available, although on a limited number.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN DUMAGUETE & NEGROS ORIENTAL

While there may not be that much one can do and see in Dumaguete City, its neighboring towns make up for it big time. The four main tours in Negros Oriental are located in Bais City (Manjuyod Sandbar tour), Valencia (waterfalls tour), Sibulan (lake tour) and Dauin (Apo Island tour). You can do and visit all four, but it would cost a bit of money (see budget section) and time, as most of these are done on a per day basis. And this doesn’t even include the neighboring province of Siquijor just yet (check the separate Siquijor guide at the bottom part of this travel guide)!

WHAT TO BUY IN DUMAGUETE

For traditional tourist souvenirs like ref magnets, keychains and t-shirt pasalubong, there’s only a single shop in Dumaguete City where you can buy these, Handumanan. But if you’re looking for something more unique to bring back from your Negros Oriental trip, head on over to the public market painitan for budbud kabog, which can last for a few days—enough to withstand the travel back home—and Sans Rival’s Silvanas. Bring back a few of these back home and your friends would treat you like royalty for a few days, lol.

DUMAGUETE & NEGROS ORIENTAL TRAVEL BUDGET

The budget for traveling in Dumaguete itself is not the expensive; in fact, you can simply walk to most of the tourist spots in the city. But once you get out of Dumaguete and start to explore the surrounding towns in Negros Oriental, your tour budget would start to skyrocket, especially if you’re traveling solo. The best way to save on tours is to rent a motorbike (PHP400.00 per day) in Dumaguete and explore the provinces of Sibulan, Valencia and Dauin (Apo Island) on your own. If you don’t know how to drive a motorcycle, your next bet is to share the expenses with fellow travelers, especially for the Manjuyod Sandbar tour and Apo Island ferry crossing.
